INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
Example 3: A Complicated Multi-Product Installation.
- The default for the custom installation has all of the items selected.
This indicates the user is going to do both a CD-ROM and hard drive install,
which makes no sense. This option should default to having nothing checked,
and let the user decide what to install.
- We performed the custom install and did not select the ***** installation.
However, the installation for the ***** program started anyway following
the installations of the main program and the slide viewer. We then clicked
on 'OK' to install the data, but got an "Error Invalid Directory." When
we ran the program, no chapters were listed, and we could therefore not
create any tests.
- At the end of the ***** installations, we got the message that "File(s)
failed to self-register: C:\WINNT\System32\Comctl32.dll".
- We installed the ***** software to D:\***** instead of the default directory.
When we got to the data installation, we got the error message, "Syntax
error, line:4 DefaultDir:d\*****, NOASKDIR, NOASKDRIVE" and the installation
stopped. When we checked the program group, all of the icons were generic
and did not function when clicked on. We checked the shortcut properties
and the target path looked correct. We shortened the name of the folder
to ***** and manually edited the shortcut, and could then run the program,
however, no chapter data had been installed.
- After the PowerPoint Viewer installation, the user is told that he must
restart the system before using the product and then is given the choice
to restart or not. If he chooses to restart, the product does not restart,
but goes on to the ***** installation.
